Dagashi, or cheap Japanese snacks, are often passed over by international Japanese snack fans in favor for more famous snack products like Pocky, Pretz, and Japanese Kit Kats, but Japan has a long history of fun, colorful snacks and the mom-and-pop stores that carry them. Thanks to anime like Dagashi Kashi, more people are getting interested in these classic Japanese snacks, and to help spread the dagashi love, OyatsuBox has packed their July subscription box full of all things dagashi!
New Video: Tasting Banana Minion Cheetos

I’ve finally managed to record and edit a new episode of Apricotsushi Samples! These are my favorite videos to do, but they’re also the most time-consuming, and they’re super extra time-consuming now that I have a puppy in the mix. But if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, so I decided to embrace my nosey puppy and include her in the video! Unfortunately the quality is a bit wonkier than normal, but Pai Pai was just too adorable for me to scrap this one.
As for the Minion banana Cheetos themselves, they were surprisingly tasty! It makes a lot more sense for them to have gone the sweet route, but that doesn’t really make them seem much like Cheetos… Well, at least they were better than the Mountain Dew Cheetos!
Let me know if you enjoyed seeing Pai Pai in this video! I can definitely include her in the future… In fact, she might not give me a choice!
Japan Funbox Subscription Review
Japan Funbox is the latest Japanese snack subscription box on the scene, and when they approached me to review their Mini box for Chic Pixel, I couldn’t resist the chance to see how they stacked up to the other boxes on the market! Hereby let it be known that I will never pass up a chance to eat Japanese food.
The Mini Japan Funbox offers 5 to 7 Japanese snacks and candy for $15 including shipping worldwide. Compared to the OyatsuBox Jr., which offers 3 to 4 treats and one gachapon for $12 but does not ship to all countries (including Australia), it’s a very comparable price. Read on to see a full rundown of what was included in my box!
July 2016 Favorites: Donuts and Planning
Welcome my newest monthly feature, Chic Pixel Favorites! I’ve seen a lot of bloggers and video creators do monthly roundup posts/videos of their favorite things, and it’s always really appealed to me as a great way to concisely share what’s tickling your fancy at any given time. But I’ve never actually gotten around to trying it myself… Until now!
Since I’m entering the absolute worst crunch time for my thesis (review in October! Ack!), there have been a lot of things lately that I’m enjoying that I just don’t have time to devote full posts to that I still would like to share. I like you enjoy it – since this is the start of a brand new series, your feedback would be greatly appreciated! Well, without further ado, here goes my very first Chic Pixel Favorites!
The Ultimate JRPG July 2016 Roundup
We’ve reached the end of the most successful JRPG July to date! It was wonderful to see everyone’s contributions, so even though I ultimately didn’t have time to do weekly roundups as originally intended, I wanted to make sure to take the time to highlight as many as possible to thank those who participated this year. If you haven’t caught up on week one yet, be sure to check that out before reading on. But for now, I’m going to get right to it, because there’s a lot to cover in this post!
August 2016 Community Game-Along: PlatinumGames
Sadly, JRPG July must come to an end, but luckily I’ve got another great Community Game-Along theme lined up for August! While many months are themed around game genres, I also like to mix in specific game developers from time to time, as well. This time around, August is all about PlatinumGames!
First Impressions: Kyoukai no Shirayuki (Saji’s Route)
Kyoukai no Shirayuki was my most anticipated game of the year, so I’m really excited to finally share it with you! As a dark otome game loosely based on aspects of Snow White with art by Kinako (Gatchaman Crowds), it ticks all the boxes for me. But since I can be incredibly slow to actually finish things, I thought it would be fun to share my first impressions of the game after finishing Saji Kakeya’s route!
